Jones Remembered As 'Remarkable' Person

CHARLES COUNTY, Md. -- The Charles County Sheriff's Office is mourning the passing of beloved forensic investigator Ernie Jones. Jones was a 48-year-veteran of law enforcement. 

Jones spent 27 years with the department. He began is long career back in 1986, joining the CCSO as a Crime Lab Technician. The following year he moved on to the position of Fingerprint Specialist. In 1988, the Chief Medical Examiner appointed Jones as a forensic investigator. He also continued his work as a Fingerprint specialist until he retired in 2013. 

Before that, he served 21 years as a prince George's County Police Officer. 

Jones received a number of commendations for teaching at the at the Southern Maryland Criminal Justice Academy and for his work on several notable cases. 

He helped collect human remains scattered over an area the size of two football field for one investigation. Jones also reviewed DNA for unsolved cases dating as far back as 1975.

His hard work was recognized with a Deputy of the Year Award in 2006.

Charles County Sheriff Troy Berry remembered him, "“Ernie was truly a remarkable person who was deeply dedicated to his job and family. He had the ability to make anyone laugh and more importantly, to make them feel special. He will be missed."
