Are you a kayak or stand up paddleboard enthusiast planning to visit Maryland anytime soon? Or if you are a resident looking for some new places to enjoy your time on the water, here are my favorite places in Maryland. There are a lot of great places to explore in the wonderful state of Maryland.

Here are the 5 top locations you should consider:

1. Chesapeake and Ohio Canal.

With its full lush vegetation, the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal is among the best locations to kayak in Maryland. A paltry $3 fee is all that is required to gain entrance, but it will be wise to bring some extra change along to cover some little other expenses.

This canal does not only feature lush vegetation but also possess a great number of inquisitive turtles to be viewed by visitors. Also present is old bridges you can paddle under with moderate currents to glide through. Thick water lilies cover some portion of the canal, so you will need a strong arm to plow you through those portions.

2. Gunpowder River.

Another fantastic place to visit in Maryland is the famous Gunpowder River with its pristine clear waters. It boasts of a strong periodic current, but the river is tranquil. Gunpowder River is no doubt one of the best place to kayak and doing that with family and friends makes it more fun. Always wear a life jacket and avoid the strong currents to stay safe.

3. Pocomoke River and Tributaries.

Its environment can be swampy at times, but the Pocomoke River and its several Tributaries are still among the best kayaking and paddle board location in Maryland. Note that there are a lot of small critters (ticks) which thrive around this area. To protect yourself from them, ensure you come along with long sleeved tops and pants. Consider using an inflatable SUP here, they sit higher in the water and don’t get caught in weeds as much.

4. Skipton Creek.

Also, called Mill Creek Skipton by many. Another one of the top to kayak in Maryland is the Skipton Creek. To experience nature at its best, ensure you kayak this particular Creek. Apart from featuring beautiful beach, oak, history, poplar trees, and dogwood, Skipton Creek also has a variety of wildlife. They include; beaver, osprey, herons, blackbirds, frogs and turtles and a host of others.

5. Thorne Gut Marsh.

If you are someone who really loves adventure and exploring new locations, then you will surely love to visit the magical Thorne Gut Mash. Powerboats are not allowed, and it is acceptable only by kayak.

Thorne Gut Marsh is no doubt one of the best spots to paddle board in Maryland because of its green and fresh environment, remote location and a lot of diverse areas available to explore. The sun here can be scalding in the afternoon so ensure you come along with a cap.
