St. Mary's Basketball wins 4th Straight with 76-72 Victory over Marymount

The St. Mary's College men’s basketball team erased a 49-27 halftime deficit by holding Marymount University to only 23 second half points and came away with an exciting 76-72 Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) victory on Wednesday evening at the Verizon Sports Arena.

The win is the fourth consecutive for the Seahawks who improve to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the CAC, while the Saints fall to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the conference with the loss.

The Seahawks reduced the deficit in the second half by connecting on 58.6 percent (17-of-29) from the field, including 6-of-10 from behind the arc and 9-of-11 from the foul line.They held the Saints to just ten field goals in the half and forced 14 turnovers.

St. Mary’s had four players in double figures led by sophomore guard Tyson Lesesne (Edgewood, MD/Edgewood) with 20 points. Junior guard Dan Engelstad (Bethesda, MD/Whitman) scored 15 points with a game-high tying six assists while senior forward Tommy Bushell (Gaithersburg, MD/Gaithersburg) also contributed with 15 points. Junior guard Valdez Preston (Dundalk, MD/Dundalk) posted a double-double for the Seahawks with 12 points and a game-high tying ten rebounds.

Marymount was led by Kyle O’Connor with 14 points. Bryant Majors tallied 12 points and Marc Mazzuchi added ten points. Charles Atakora contributed with nine points and a game-high tying ten rebounds.

The Seahawks will return to action on Saturday afternoon when they host Mary Washington for an early season battle for first-place in the conference. The game is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
