Flags Lowered Honoring Cobb Island VFD & EMS Fireman And Lifetime Member, Douglas Hands

LA PLATA, Md. - Commissioner President Reuben B. Collins, II, Esq. ordered the Charles County flag to be lowered to half-staff effective immediately and returned to full-staff on sunset November 20, 2021, to honor Cobb Island Volunteer Fire Department and EMS fireman and lifetime member, Douglas Hands.

Douglas Sean Hands, 48 years of age, passed away on Saturday, October 30, 2021 as a result of drowning.

Douglas was born on November 15, 1972 in Washington DC to the late Joseph and Ramona Hands. He was one of eight children. Patricia, Catherine (Ricky), Karen (Wayne), Stephanie (Ronnie), Donna (Wendy), Joseph (Charisse) Babette (Hubie) and many nieces and nephews.

Doug married Tammy on January 19, 2012. He always said she was the love of his life. They resided on Cobb Island and had four daughters. Kimberly (Daniel), Anna (Matthew), Carly (Chase), and Mia. They also had two foster sons. Tim Mendenhall and Joseph Springstead. He had a grand-daughter Chloe Ann.

Dougl first started his career in construction while he was still in high school. He later moved on to roofing, and insurance restoration. Doug’s biggest love was working the river. A year before his death his dream of being a commercial waterman came true. Doug refurbished his father’s boat and spent his final days on the water crabbing.

Doug had many friends but his two closest were Allan Shymansky and Bill Todd. They could often be found together on and off the water.

Doug wore many hats. Doug was a fireman and life member of the Cobb Island Volunteer Fire Department and EMS. He was also a member of the Board of Directors. He was a foster parent. He has played Santa Claus and also the Easter Bunny for the community children.

Doug is known for his love of helping people and he never met a stranger.
