PASADENA, Maryland -- Police say poor lighting, dark clothing, and alcohol use all contributed to an accident that left a bicyclist dead after an accident in Pasadena, Maryland on Friday. The main cause of the accident was that the man was riding his bike illegally in the roadway.

The Anne Arundel County Police Department said the man was riding north on Catherine Avenue in the middle of the travel lane around 9:44 pm. The cyclist wore all black clothing and there were no head or tail lights on his dark blue bike.

The driver of a Jeep, also travelling north on Catherine, did not see the bike until it was right behind it. The driver attempted to avoid the man but it was too late and the two collided.

Police said the man flew off the bike and landed in the road. The bike landed in the southbound lane and was hit by another vehicle.

Both drivers immediately called 911. Emergency room staff at Baltimore Washington Medical Center later pronounced the cyclist dead. The cyclist did not have identification and police have yet to identify him.

The Traffic Safety Section is handling the crash investigation.
