Marbury volunteers give the gift of Thanksgiving

La Plata, MD - The 30 members of the Marbury Volunteer Fire Department made the holiday a little more special for eight families in Charles County Tuesday, Nov. 25, donating complete Thanksgiving dinners to the Department of Community Services in La Plata.

“I just felt some of our members were in a position to help needy families,” said Company 8 Chief Danny Hudson.

“This is our first year doing this,” Company 8 member Chuck Burroughs said. “Our members donated the money.”

“Danny contacted us requesting families,” said Loretta Graham of the Department of Social Services. Graham directed Hudson to the agency’s Fatherhood Program, which she explained is a program for non-custodial parents.

“They meet as a group every week,” she explained. “We help facilitate life skills and employment for these individuals.”

She noted the donated food would go to eight families in this particular program and remaining food would go to foster care parents and added she was surprised at the abundance of food the volunteers brought.

“They’re actually full meals,” Hudson said, “turkey, sides ready to heat.”

“They set all that up,” Graham said. “For them to be able to do this is wonderful. I thought they were bringing non-perishable meals, but they brought everything. Some families really needed them.”

Charles County Volunteer Firefighters Association Public Information Officer Bill Smith said volunteers are still holding their winter coat drive for another week at fire stations countywide from 5-8 p.m. daily.

He said the response from the initial Thanksgiving effort to purchase food for needy families has inspired them to expand the program.

“This is something we intend to do next year countywide,” Smith said.
