La Plata promotes local holiday shopping

La Plata, MD - The Town of La Plata is gearing up for the holidays with Shop La Plata Saturday, Nov. 29 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

La Plata Mayor Roy G. Hale said at the town’s monthly meeting Tuesday, Nov. 25, the event will kick-off with a ribbon-cutting 7:30 a.m. at the town hall, where Star 98’s T-Bone and Heather will be broadcasting live from 2:30-4:30 p.m. and that Santa’s arrives at 4 p.m.

“We have 22 businesses signed up to participate,” Hale said. “We’re hoping this will become an annual event.”

In other business at the regular town meeting, Council member Joe Norris said site plans have been approved for a three-story senior assisted living facility, Heritage of Charles County Nursing & Rehabilitation Center at the southeast corner of Washington Avenue and Heritage Center Parkway.

Norris said Heritage representatives recently met before the town’s planning commission for site plan approval.

“It’s a very interesting project,” Norris said, “quite an ambitious project,” he added.

“Approval was granted for most of what they needed,” he stated. “They weren’t prepared yet for the signage and lighting, that sort of thing. It was otherwise approved. It looks like a great project and a great addition to the town.”

The town council also unanimously agreed to extend the contract of Town Manager Daniel J. Mears another three years.

Hale also promoted the town’s Old Time Holiday Gathering Saturday, Dec. 6 from 3-6 p.m., stating there would be horse drawn carriage rides from 2:30-5 p.m. including a holiday carol sing along and the lighting of the town’s Christmas tree.

Police Chief Carl Schinner noted that town police were again holding a Toys For Tots program for the holiday, saying citizens can drop toys off at the police station, 101 La Grange Avenue or at the La Plata Town Hall.
