  • By

On Nov. 15, at approximately 6:40 p.m. patrol units from the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office responded to the area of Golden Beach Road and Hickory Drive in Mechanicsville for the report of a fatal motor vehicle collision. Upon their arrival on the scene Sheriff's Office crash reconstructionists were requested.  The Collision Reconstruction Team responded to the scene to assume the investigation.

Initial Investigation revealed a 2007 Chrysler 300C, operated by Brieana La-Ryn Wood, 20, of Mechanicsville was eastbound on Golden Beach Road in the area of Hickory Drive. Wood applied brakes in an attempt to avoid striking a deer. The deer struck the vehicle. A 2002 Harley-Davidson motorcycle operated by Francis John McDaniel, 46, of Mechanicsville was also traveling eastbound on Golden Beach behind the Chrysler.

The motorcycle struck the rear of the Chrysler, at which time the motorcycle and operator went down and crossed into the westbound lane of Golden Beach Road where it was struck by a 2005 Scion XB, operated by Gary Leon Cave Jr., 41, of Mechanicsville. McDaniel was ejected from the motorcycle and the Scion overturned. McDaniel succumb to his injuries on the scene and was pronounced dead.

Initial investigation indicates the primary cause of the collision was McDaniel operating the motorcycle and following too closely to the 2007 Chrysler. At this point there is no indication that speed, alcohol or drugs were contributing factors.

Anyone who may have witnesses the crash is asked to contact Cpl. Brian Connelly at (301)475-4200 ext. 9010. The crash remains under investigation.

Also responding were emergency units from Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire and Rescue and Advanced Life Support.
