The Maryland Association of Boards of Education (MABE), the Board of Education of St. Mary’s County, and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Michael J. Martirano invites parents, community members, business leaders, and SMCPS employees to participate in “What Counts?” a community forum to be held Wednesday, November 30, 2005, 7:00-9:00 p.m., at the Dr. James A. Forrest Career and Technology Center, 24005 Point Lookout Road, Leonardtown, MD 20650.

The purpose of the forum is to explore how the effectiveness and quality of public schools in St. Mary’s County should be measured.  In light of the federal No Child Left Behind act and the current trend to reduce school accountability to standardized test scores, it is particularly important to have conversations about expectations of schools.

“We must build positive relationships among adults so that improved efforts for children take place,” said Dr. Michael J. Martirano, superintendent of schools. “This forum is a continuation of our ongoing outreach to the community to enhance communications amongst all groups.”

If you plan to participate in this important endeavor, please RSVP by calling 301-475-5511, ext. 178, or by sending an email to .  Please include “What Counts?” as the subject of your email.
