Christmas on the Square with the 58th annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony Cheered Visitors After Thanksgiving

Black Friday was far more colorful in Leonardtown. On Friday evening locals gathered for the 8th annual “Christmas on the Square” and the 58th annual “Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony” in Historic Downtown Leonardtown.

For almost sixty years Leonardtown has boasted a festive Christmas tree in its Historic Center on Washington Street. The trees were originally live ones, but recently the town adopted an artificial one to help conserve natural resources.

Among the holiday entertainment was caroling, a nativity scene, a petting zoo, and Santa Claus himself, who greeted children in a ginger-bread style house.

Visitors also queued for horse and carriage rides around the Square, and a Leonardtown Express train ride, and a trip aboard a fire truck. Children enjoyed crafting, face painting, and an assortment of friendly characters such as Frosty the Snowman and the Jolly Juggler.

The event opened with a performance of the “Star Spangled Banner” by Becky and Lauren Norris, followed by STICKS drama from Hollywood Church of the Nazarene, and live music from the College of Southern Maryland’s guitar club.

The cold evening was warmed by festive singing from Rebecca Hill, Heather Greer, Sarah Meagher, and Deigh Wathen, as well as Father Andrew White School Chorus, and Leonardtown Baptist Church Choir. Gracie’s Guys & Gals Dance Troupe, The Brenzo Family, St. Mary’s Starz Cheerleaders, and Blonde Ambition also performed, and Doug Mackey demonstrated some angelic ice sculpting.
