Woman, 71, Dies in House Fire

CECIL COUNTY, Md. - A 71-year-old woman died after a house fire Saturday, October 17, 2020 in Cecil County. Now, the State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating how that fire started.

According to fire officials, the fire broke out around 2 pm on Old East Philadelphia Road. By the time 35 firefighters from North East Fire Company and other departments got to the scene, the one-story home was engulfed in flames. Firefighters spent 20 minutes getting the fire under control.

They discovered the body of a woman in the home's living room. Cecil County EMS paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene. The body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine the exact cause of death.

The victim is identified as Anita June Rowland, 71. Also killed in the fire was Rowland's dog. 

Firefighters found no working smoke alarms at the scene. The home and its contents were a total loss with a value of approximately $100,000. 

Due to the fatal nature of the fire, the Maryland State Police is assisting the Fire Marshal in the investigation.
