Firefighter Honored For Safety Education Efforts

WALDORF, Md. - A  lifelong Waldorf Volunteer Firefighter was recognized for his many achievements by Southern Maryland Volunteer Firemen's Association. 

Dan Stevens was nominated for the Smith N. Stathem, Jr. Memorial Safety Award.

Stevens is a former chief of the Waldorf Volunteer Fire Department. During his more than 50 years as a volunteer firefighter, Stevens has served as chief, assistant chief, captain, and chairman of the board of directors.

Stevens is a certified State Emergency Services Instructor and worked as a field instructor for the Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute. 

He also served on several other training and safety committees.

 The Smith N. Stathem, Jr. Memorial Safety Award recognizes the person who does the most to promote firefighter and EMS safety within their department.

It is normally presented at the annual convention, which was postponed this year due to COVID-19.

The nominee keeps the trophy for one year and passes it on to the next winner at the annual convention.
