LUSBY, Md. -- Three people were hospitalized with burns after a fire in Calvert County in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Firefighters from the St. Leonard Volunteer Fire Department responded to a house fire on Saw Mill Road in Lusby just after 3 am in the morning.

The State Fire Marshal said the fire broke out in the kitchen and living room area of the home's first floor. Three occupants of the home escaped by jumping from second floor windows.

Firefighters initially feared a fourth resident was missing in the fire. They were forced to abandon the search when the house began to collapse. Fortunately, firefighters later discovered that individual was not at home and was safe.

It took 45 firefighters 45 minutes to get the flames under control.

Three people were taken to Calvert Memorial Hospital with burns and other injuries. They were later transferred to MedStar Washington Hospital Center.

The house partially collapsed due to the fire damage. Estimated loss of the home and contents is $200,000.  Due to the collapse of the house, investigators are unable to determine if there were working smoke alarms.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
