Join Us at The Second Annual Fly4aCure - Kite Festival 2019

Leonardtown, MD - October 10, 2019 - Today, almost everyone in the US knows someone who has been affected by blood cancer. On average, every 3 minutes someone unwillingly joins this arduous fight. Forty percent of all pediatric cancers are blood cancers. However, in the last 30 years only 4 oncology drugs have been approved for first use in children. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is the largest non-profit dedicated to creating a world without blood cancers. Their most recent venture is the LLS Children’s Initiative that was created “to disrupt the status quo with their bold vision for young patients – to not only survive their cancer but thrive in their lives after treatment.”

In 2018, Samir and Saar Shah formed Team Fly4aCure and focused on creating the Fly4aCure Kite Festival. This was an opportunity for all Southern Maryland community members to come together and raise awareness of blood cancer and honor those who have bravely fought the battle. Despite cold and rainy weather conditions, we saw over 1200 participants gather to support their community. House Majority Leader, Steny Hoyer and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital President, Michael Sachtleben helped inaugurate the event and spoke at our recognition ceremony. We even managed to capture Fox 5 DC News coverage of our event.  But most of all, we made many blood cancer patients happy, renewing faith that a cure is possible.

We would like to continue the tradition started last year and once again host the Fly4aCure Kite Festival on Saturday October 12, 2019 at the St. Mary’s Fairgrounds in Leonardtown, Maryland. We hope that this event will allow families to get together, enjoy the fresh air, and raise awareness for a good cause.  In addition, we are planning a special recognition ceremony for those in our community who have been touched by blood cancer.  Entertainment, music, food, and fun awaits.  Please check out our website at www.fly4acure.org and help spread the word.

This year, we would like to focus on pediatric cancer and LLS’s Children’s Initiative. While many children survive the most common types of blood cancers, the treatments are often harsh and outdated. The long-term effects of current therapies can create severe life-threatening complications. Eighty percent of childhood cancer survivors develop one or more chronic health conditions as a result of their treatment. That’s why LLS is doubling their investment in pediatric research and pioneering an unprecedented collaborative clinical trial to change the way pediatric blood cancers are treated while expanding the service and support for patients and their families.

We hope you can join us for a fabulous afternoon to help raise awareness for Blood Cancers and Pediatric Blood Cancers. We look forward to seeing you all!
