Prince Frederick Kmart to close

The Kmart Store in Prince Frederick served as a Shop with a Cop destination for many Christmas seasons.

Prince Frederick, MD - Attention shoppers! Kmart’s nearly 30-year run in central Calvert County is drawing to a close. According to Sears Holdings, the company, which filed for bankruptcy Monday morning, Oct. 15 will be closing over 142 unprofitable Sears and Kmart stores nationwide. In addition to Prince Frederick, the Oxon Hill Kmart is the other store in Maryland that will be closing. The Sears stores in Bowie, Westminster and Columbia are also on the closure list.

According to USA Today, liquidation sales at the locations that Sears Holdings will be shuttering are likely to begin within the next two weeks.

The Prince Frederick Kmart opened in the fall of 1991 during a two-week period when Walmart and Giant also opened stores in the Calvert County town. For several years the store was the destination for participants in Calvert County’s Shop with a Cop event at Christmas time.
