Don't miss Appy Fest this weekend

Mechanicsville, MD - This Saturday, October 6, Last Chance Animal Rescue (LCAR) and the Maryland Fund for Horses (MFFH) are hosting “Appy Fest,” a 2-day family friendly festival celebrating the rehabilitation and training of some of the 100 plus starving, feral Appaloosa/Quarter horses seized from a farm on the eastern shore of Maryland.

Appy Fest 2018 is an innovative way to rehome horses from large scale cruelty seizures, as well as showcase the horses and their training. Horses are available for meet and greets as well as adoptions at the event. Appy Fest 2018 also includes a trainers’ competition, horse adoptions, equine demonstrations, shopping, food, face-painting, and pony rides.

In March 2018, more than 100 starved feral horses were seized from a farm in Wicomico County, Maryland.  The horses were placed with rescues throughout the Mid-Atlantic area, and since then their recovery has been nothing short of miraculous.  Most of the horses have received professional training, preparing them for new adoptive homes.  The next stage of their transformation is finding loving, permanent homes. There are several mares who have had foals who are also available for the public to meet and see their training.

“We think that by helping connect rescue organizations with trainers as quickly as the horse’s recovery allows and by providing an adoption showcase, we are pioneering an innovative approach to managing the aftermath of a large-scale hoarding event.  Organizing and funding a Trainer’s Challenge encourages trainers to participate in the horse’s rehabilitation while receiving compensation for their services and oversite to ensure consistency in care and training. It is a win-win for the horses, trainers and the potential new homes,” said Victoria Carson, MFFH president.

Last Chance Animal Rescue’s director, Cynthia Sharpley added, “LCAR has been assisting with large-scale rescue operations involving dogs and cats for years- the collaborative approach involving other organizations, the community and special events to help animals has been very successful and we are thrilled to be teaming up to assist these horses in need.”
