Public Invited to Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for Wicomico Shores Public Landing Improvement Project

  • By

The Board of County Commissioners and the Department of Recreation, Parks and Community Services invite the public to the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the recent improvements at the Wicomico Shores Public Landing.

"We hope that citizens will join us at the public landing Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on Tuesday, October 25, 2005, at 2:00 p.m.," stated Thomas F. McKay, President, Board of County Commissioners. "The renovated public landing will provide improved water access and enhanced boat launching facilities on the Wicomico River."

The majority of the funds needed to improve the facilities at Wicomico Shores Public Landing were received from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Waterway Improvement Grant Program. Other funding for the project was provided by St. Mary’s County Government and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as a result of damages sustained at the landing after Hurricane Isabel. The four phase project involved marsh creation, revetment and the construction of a break water structure; dredging a channel to improve boating access; replacement of the boat ramp and step down pier; and the replacement of most of the large fishing, crabbing and boating pier. Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) improvements were also addressed as part of the project.

Directions to the site: from Route 234 west, turn left on Aviation Yacht Club Drive. Then turn left on Army-Navy Drive and follow the road down to the waterfront area and public landing.
