WALDORF, Md. - Due to COVID-19 concerns, the 9th annual Southern Maryland Hiring Event will be virtual. There will still be dozens of companies and businesses looking for new hires. This year, the event has been renamed #TCCSMDGetHired Virtually.

The job fair is scheduled on September 23 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m..

Yvette Turner, Business Engagement Specialist for the Tri-County Council for Southern Maryland said, “The way we initially meet talent may have changed but not the outcome.” According to Turner, the outcome for many will be well-paying jobs with bright futures.

“The Tri-County Council for Southern Maryland’s Workforce Division has been connecting businesses to local talent via the annual regional hiring event for nearly a decade,” said Ruthy Davis, Director of Regional Workforce & Business Development, “and we’re not going to allow the pandemic to stop us. This year’s virtual hiring event perpetuates our mission by offering employers a new way to connect with our pool of trained workers and giving the people we serve new opportunities to become economically self-sufficient through the power of hard work.”

Companies Love Virtual Hiring

Turner said she’s been conducting virtual recruitment's for Tri-County businesses since her office began to work remotely in March and businesses love it. “The feedback I received from those business is that they find being video interviewing and recruiting online to be efficient, time saving, and that job seekers show more of their true selves."

Large companies from all over the state are participating. Many companies are hiring immediately. She said there are a lot of jobs in connection with the 301 Bridge Project and the Amazon Warehouse in Waldorf. Turner said, the bridge jobs offer workers a chance to take a well-paying entry-level job and learn important skills to take with them into the future.

Turner explained that everything is online. "The platform is very user-friendly. You'll have an experience as if you're at an actual hiring event. Job-seekers be able to apply immediately for the company's opening and check directly with hiring representatives from The businesses. Some businesses will invite you to a same-day video interview."

On-The-Spot Hiring

According to Turner, the job prospects are bright. “We currently have 55 businesses registered and we continue to have more businesses sign up on the hour. There will be hundreds of job opportunities available from entry level to skilled trades to DOD, IT/Professional Opportunities and an urgent need from Southern Maryland’s largest industries Healthcare, Retail/Hospitality and Construction.  Every participating business is looking to hire immediately!  Last year our hiring event had 52 on-the-spot job offers. This year our registered businesses have shared that for the right candidate they are prepared to invite candidates to same day video interviews and once again provide on the spot job offers."
