St. Mary’s County, MD — The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office is warning drivers about the laws regarding tinted windows.

In Maryland, it’s illegal to operate a vehicle with any tinting materials added to the window after that don’t allow at least 35% of light to get through. Dark tinting may not be added to to the immediate left or right of the driver.

Officers can stop a vehicle just to check the tinting. If you’re found to be in violation an officer can issue a citation and a repair order.

The only exception is if a driver has a written certification from a physician detailing why they need to be protected from the sun. They need to have that certification with them at the time they’re stopped. The physician must be licensed to practice medicine in Maryland.

These rules also don’t apply to easily removable decals that are affixed to windows to block sun from children 10 and under.

The fine for operating a vehicle with unauthorized window tinting material is $70, plus the repair order.
