Open House for Chesapeake Public Charter School

The Chesapeake Public Charter School Alliance will host an open house on Saturday, September 16, 2006, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the proposed site for the school in Great Mills. Interested community members can tour the facility and learn about the charter school.

The proposed site for the school is the former tennis and racquetball facility and corporate office complex on Great Mills Road.

Once the St. Mary's County Board of Education approves the location and the final plans for the charter school, organizers expect to begin renovations to the building in January 2007.

A public school under the administrative oversight of the St. Mary'sCounty school district, Chesapeake Public Charter School will incorporate concepts of learning that have been tested and proven in other non-traditional schools throughout the United States. While the charter school will focus on increasing student achievement in math, reading, and science, it will also feature smaller class sizes and multi-grade classrooms in which children are encouraged to explore hands-on activities that support a variety of learning styles. The school will be dedicated to the whole-child approach to education that fosters a joyful embrace of lifelong learning. Enrollment will be based on family choice, and strong parental involvement is a key element of the school's philosophy.
