CHESAPEAKE BEACH, Md. — The Town of Chesapeake Beach put out a series of statements this past week regarding the passing of its former Mayor and well-known community figure, Gerald W. Donovan.

One of those releases is to notify many of his highly anticipated “final tribute” that will proceed through the town on Saturday, August 7.

Below is the first release put out from the Town of Chesapeake Beach.

“The Mayor, Town Council and Town staff send their deepest condolences to the Donovan family after hearing of the passing of Gerald W. Donovan on July 31, 2021.

Mr. Donovan served the citizens of the Town of Chesapeake Beach as the Mayor for 24 years (from 1984-2008), served as the President of the North Beach Volunteer Fire Department and has operated the Rod-N-Reel resort, which continues to serve as the largest employer in the Town.  Mr. Donovan also founded, and hosted, the successful Cancer Gala/ Celebration of Life raising over $5M for the American Cancer Society. 

We will continue to keep the Donovan family in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”

Another release was recently put out regarding the anticipated celebration.

“Please join us on Saturday, August 7th at approximately 1:30-1:45 in our Final Tribute to Gerald. He will have one final pass through the town he loved so much! Please line the streets & wave flags to pay our final respects to an incredible man. Flags are available for pick up at Town Hall, until 4:30 PM today, in preparation of your participation tomorrow.

Please expect traffic delays as the Donovan family make their way along the route listed below.

Route: Departing St. Anthony’s at approximately 1:30 p.m. past Veterans Park, Town Hall, Chesapeake Beach Waterpark, through Rod ‘N’ Reel Resort then back out to Route 260 & out of town.“

Even U.S. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer[D-Md.] released a statement on Donovan’s passing.

“Like so many, I will remember Gerald’s friendship and leadership with admiration and respect,” Hoyer said. “I send my condolences to his wife and partner Mary, to all of his family, and to the residents of his beloved town of Chesapeake Beach, which he served so well for so long and in so many different capacities. He made a profound and positive difference.  Gerald will be greatly missed by all who knew him and whose lives he enriched.”
