Woman purposely sets own hotel room on fire

Hagerstown, MD --  The State Fire Marshall says a woman set fire to her room at a Motel 6 in Hagerstown by igniting paper and cardboard.

The fire broke out at 2:35 a.m. in room 308 of the Motel 6 on 1321 Massey Boulevard.

Occupants in the adjoining rooms observed smoke and a woman fleeing.

Twenty-seven firefighters were able extinguish the fire within five minutes. The Fire Marshall credits the smoke alarm, and quick response by the neighboring guests for helping to contain the damage.

The room suffered $2,000 in damages as the fire spread across the carpet and along the sides of the entrance doorway.

The State Fire Marshal's Western Regional Office arrived shortly after and discovered Ms. Diane Susan Webster, 66, of Hagerstown, hiding behind the motel in the weeds.

Webster was transported to Meritus Medical Center for evaluation before being taken into custody, and detained, at the Washington County Detention Center without bond. She is charged with felony first degree arson and reckless endangerment, if convicted, she would face up to 35 years and/or $55,000 in total fines.
