St. Mary's County, MD -- It's back-to-school time in St. Mary's County for both kids and officers. For the first time, each of the middle and high schools in the county will have their own dedicated school resource officer.

The Sheriff’s Office has seven School Resource Officers in place. One each for Chopticon High School, Great Mills High School, Leonardtown High School, Esperanza Middle School, Leonardtown Middle School, Margaret Brent Middle School and Spring Ridge Middle School.

Sheriff Tim Cameron said, “School Resource Officers not only provide for a law-enforcement presence, but are also positive influences on students each school day.”

For the first day of school on September 3, Sheriff Cameron and his deputies plan to have a stepped-up presence near all public and parochial schools to ensure the safety of students.

“I would like teachers, students and parents to be assured that their school campuses will be safe when the doors open on the first day,” Sheriff Cameron said, “so that educators can get back to doing what they do best: Fostering a learning environment for children.”
