Pet dies after lightning sets house on fire

Hughesville, MD --  A Hughesville home was heavily damaged by an early-morning fire that resulted in the death of a pet cat.

Firefighters responded to the fire around 6:30 a.m. on Friday morning. The Fire Marshall says the blaze was started by a lightning strike to the roof of the garage. 

It took 15 minutes for 48 firefighters from the Hughesville Volunteer Fire Department to get the flames extinguished.

No occupants or firefighters were reported injured.
