Harwood, MD -- Anne Arundel County Police say a driver U-turned directly into the path of a police vehicle with lights and sirens turned on, causing an accident on Thursday.

It happened just after 3 p.m. when officers were responding to an accident at Solomons Island Road and Mill Swamp Road in Harwood.

Officers were in the southbound lane of Solomons Island Road approaching Jessie Road in a fully marked police vehicle with lights and sirens activated.

When they encountered traffic that was slowed for the crash ahead, the police vehicle entered the northbound lane, with lights and siren still activated, to pass the slowed traffic.

Kendal Marie Chaney, 27, was in a Nissan Altima that was part of the slowed southbound traffic. Chaney made a U-turn directly into the path of the oncoming police vehicle, resulting in the collision.

The officers were transported to Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver was taken to Prince Georges Hospital Trauma Center, also with non life-threatening injuries.

Police say he primary cause of the crash was the driver of the Nissan making an unsafe U-turn and failing to yield right of way to an oncoming emergency vehicle. Speed, drugs and alcohol are not believed to be a contributing factor. The crash remains under investigation.
