Laurel, MD -- 5.22 million gallons of untreated wastewater overflowed into Broad Creek in Prince George's County last Friday.

Crews from the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission worked round the clock to stop the spill, which started Friday afternoon at the Broad Creek Wastewater Pumping Station in the Fort Washington area, and lasted for 12 hours.

Crews cleaned up the area around the station and applied lime to help control the odor. Signs were posted warning residents to avoid the area.

Drinking water was not affected. Officials say they will conduct an investigation into what caused the spill. Preliminary reports indicate a pipe buried approximately 30-feet deep at the station may have failed.
