Horse euthanized after rescue in Mechanicsville

MECHANICSVILLE, Md. - Despite the efforts of the Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department during a hard fought animal rescue, a horse was euthanized, Wednesday morning.

On Aug. 14, 6:40 p.m., crews from the Mechanicsville VFD and other agencies responded to the 26300 block of Meadow Wood Drive for an animal rescue.

When crews arrived on scene, they discovered a horse trapped in a hole as deep as the horse's height. Due to the depth of the hole and the position of the horse, crews faced major difficulties gaining access to lift the horse.

Units brought in a small excavator machine and dug around the horse enough for crews to be able to pull it out of the hole.

After nearly five hours of work, the horse was brought to a safe area for rest and a medical evaluation from a veterinarian.

Unfortunately, the owner and veterinarian agreed it necessary to euthanize the horse.
