Prince Frederick, MD – Camp Phoenix is three-day, day camp for grieving children and teens ages 7 to 15. This year, camp was held on July 11, 12, and 13 at Kings Landing Park in Huntingtown.

This year 26 children attended camp and enjoyed traditional camp activities as well as support group discussions, various activities to help them deal with the feelings and emotions that come with a loss, and a butterfly release in memory of their loved one. Campers were each gifted a free handmade blanket from the ladies of Project Linus, a keepsake that will keep the children warm and provide them comfort during difficult times.

Camp Phoenix made a positive impact on the children who attended. One parent remarked, “My daughter was able to see other kids that are grieving,” and another said, “My children had a wonderful experience.”

Each camper was matched with an adult “Buddy” who spent the three days with them, providing support and friendship. The buddies often find the time just as rewarding and beneficial as the children do.

Calvert Hospice offers bereavement services for people of all ages, including individual counseling, support groups, and specialized programs held throughout the year. If you or a loved one is grieving and needs support, please don’t hesitate to call.
