On Aug. 9, St. Mary’s Sheriff’s deputies responded to the rear of a Lexington Park business with several apartment dwellings for a reported stabbing.

Upon arrival they made contact with the victim, Dale Smith, 39 of Lexington Park. Smith was suffering from at least two stab wounds to the abdomen and upper chest.

He was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital and later flown to Washington Hospital Center.

The suspect, Alvin Leroy Goings, 42 of no fixed address, was located unconscious in the parking lot of the establishment.

He was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital for treatment of a laceration to the back side of his head and was admitted.

With information and evidence gathered at the scene, Deputy Michael George determined that the victim and the suspect engaged in a verbal argument over a stolen bicycle.

Goings produced a knife and threatened to kill Smith, police say, and Goings then stabbed Smith twice.

Smith then punched Goings in the face, rendering him unconscious and causing a laceration to his head when he hit the ground.

A State’s Attorney Office review will determine what charges will be filed in this case.
