On Aug. 13, St. Mary’s Sheriff Corporal Deborah Milam responded to a call for “shots fired” in the Hollywood area.

Upon arrival the officer encountered the suspect, James Edward Clarke seated inside of a vehicle. Clarke pointed a shotgun outside the vehicle and fired an additional shot.

Lt. Daniel Alioto, patrol division commander, told The Bay Net that Clarke may have been acting “under the auspices of defending a family member."

The shot was not fired at the officer, Alioto said, who had taken cover behind a vehicle after arriving, and Clarke may have been unaware the officer was on the scene.

A family member moved in-between the officer and the suspect, causing the suspect to surrender the weapon and himself.

Clarke was arrested and charged with one count of Reckless Endangerment and transported to the Detention Center, where he was awaiting a bond hearing.
