100 million hit by credit card hack

  • By

A Seattle woman managed to hack one of credit card company Capital One's servers. That server contained the private information of over 100 million people.

Most of the information belonged to customers and small businesses that applied for credit cards between 2004 and 2019.

Among the data stolen:

  • Customer status data, e.g., credit scores, credit limits, balances, payment history, contact information
  • Fragments of transaction data from a total of 23 days during 2016, 2017 and 2018
  • About 140,000 Social Security numbers of our credit card customers
  • About 80,000 linked bank account numbers of our secured credit card customers
  • For Canadian customers, approximately 1 million Social Insurance Numbers

The hacker, a software engineer, targeted a vulnerability in Capital One's system, which the company says has no been fixed.

Capital one says it will notify anyone who's affected and provide free credit monitoring and ID theft protection.
