Water, watermelon everywhere as town marks The Fourth

La Plata, MD - On Independence Day, before lighting up the sky, Americans love to cool off, get wet and savor the traditional foods of summer. The Southern Maryland town of La Plata did just that Wednesday, July 4, hosting the annual Watermelon Bash at town hall.

La Plata Mayor Jeannine E. James greeted the hundreds of attendees to the three-hour feast. Succulent slices of fresh watermelon were served to anyone patient enough to wait in the long but rapidly moving line. Each person also got a free hot dog, bottled water and an ice treat on a stick.

On the town hall grounds five water slides--Lil Kahuna, Log Jammer, Tropical Island, Tsunami and Surf Slip and Slide—were set up for the kids. The real soggy fun began around noon on La Grange Avenue when the crew from the La Plata Volunteer Fire Department cranked up the water cannon providing children and adults with a prolonged shower. It was the perfect remedy for early July’s stifling heat.

Throughout the summer La Plata hosts outdoor concerts at the town hall. The next show is Friday July 6 from 7 to 9 p.m. with the Ryan Forrester Band, a group that plays a blend of rock, soul and rhythm and blues. Concert goers are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs for sitting. Coolers are allowed, but alcohol is prohibited. Concessions are available from the town’s food trailer located in the back of the parking lot as is an ice cream truck. There is also a play area for children—the Kids’ Zone

La Plata officials are also encouraging outdoor fun in other areas of the town. Neighborhoods interested in organizing an event such as a block party or cookout may apply for a Town of La Plata Neighborhood Event Mini-Grant. The allocation is designed to provide an opportunity for Town of La Plata residents to strengthen their neighborhoods through producing special events. Town officials are asking neighborhood associations and communities to submit the neighborhood grant application for review. There will be five grants awarded up to $500 each. Deadline to submit application is Sept. 7. Grant applications are available for download here or email Special Events Coordinator Colleen Wilson at or (301) 934-8421.
