Southern Maryland celebrates Independence Day

Hollywood, MD - Despite some challenging weather, Southern Marylanders managed to successfully celebrate the nation’s 239th birthday during the three-day Fourth of July Weekend.

In St. Mary’s County, the Seventh annual Independence Day Celebration at the Hollywood Volunteer Fire Department Saturday, July 4 drew a huge crowd. In addition to carnival rides, games and food, the gathering enjoyed the traditional fireworks show after dusk. There was also live music, performed by Come Back Iris and Robbie Boothe. Nine corporate sponsors helped fund the fire company’s big celebration, which was a prelude to its annual carnival.

Shortly before the fireworks show began the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office issued an alert that parking at the carnival grounds had been maxed out and traffic on Route 235 near the event was heavily congested.
