Park and museum hosts day of service

JEFFERSON PATTERSON PARK AND MUSEUM "DAY OF SERVICE" at SMILE

ST. LEONARD, MD - On Wednesday, July 29th, as part of Governor Larry Hogan's "Maryland Unites: A Day of Service" initiative, Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum (JPPM) personnel volunteered over 30 hours assisting with thrift shop intake and pantry food distribution at SMILE in Lusby, Maryland. SMILE is the acronym for 'Service Makes Individual Lives Exciting."

SMILE is an ecumenical community outreach charity. The charity is comprised of seven churches in southern Calvert County whose purpose is to establish and operate an interdenominational ministry to enable people of all denominations to work together to provide food, clothing, and other forms of assistance and support for those in need. The primary source of funding comes from community donations of clothing, household items, toys, furniture and other marketable goods sold in charity's thrift shop.   Proceeds from thrift shop sales are used to purchase food for the pantry and to provide emergency financial assistance throughout the year. In any given month, SMILE provides assistance to over 1000 families. SMILE serves southern Calvert County from Broome's Island Road to Solomons.

In addition to volunteer service hours, during the month of July, JPPM personnel collected clothing, shoes and personal care items to be donated to SMILE and Project Echo.
