Cat tests positive for rabies

A cat captured in the Yardley Hills area of Prince Frederick has tested positive for rabies.  The adult tan and black striped cat was picked up on Friday, July 24, 2015 by an Animal Control Officer after notification by a resident reporting an ill cat was under his car.

A positive result for rabies was confirmed by the laboratory at Maryland’s Department of Health on Monday July 27, 2015.

Rabies is a fatal disease spread through the saliva of an infected animal.  When an exposed person receives proper medical care, treatment is 100% effective.

If you had any direct contact with a cat in the Yardley Hills area meeting this description, you are urged to report this to the Sheriff’s office at 410-535-2800.  If you did not have direct contact with the cat, you are not in any danger.
