During a recent visit with Baynet Radio and TheBAYNET.com, Democratic candidate for Charles County Commissioner, Debra Davis explained her positions on a variety of issues facing Charles County citizens residing in her district.

“Charles County needs leadership, someone who is passionate about working together to empower the entire region,” said Davis. “We need to bring in more businesses to expand the tax base without burdening the tax-payers any further.”

Davis explained that in order to attract more businesses to Charles County is for the County Leadership to demonstrate that it is willing to work with businesses and help them through the process of building and doing business in the county.

“Once we increase the tax base, everything else stabilizes and we can build upon that to expand jobs and housing for residents,” said Davis. The candidate went on to explain that attracting service and intellectual businesses also makes sense in that these types of businesses do not require many additional services therefore increasing county revenues without further adding to the expenditures required to support those businesses.

When asked about affordable housing and how Charles could address that situation, Davis stated that it was a big issue with no easy solution. “In many cases people say they want affordable housing, as long as it is not in their back yard. In my Leadership Southern Maryland studies, one thing they stressed was to improve locally, we should seek out help and support from our regional neighbors,” said Davis.

She said that there have been some jurisdictions that have managed to figure out affordable housing for citizens and that what would make the most sense if to call on those jurisdictions to see how they accomplished correction the situation.

When asked about managing growth, Davis said, “We must embrace the growth and diversity of the County; with a decisive plan that holds fast to our core values of great schools, affordable housing, and safe neighborhoods. What’s more that management must be done in such a way so as to preserve the environment and our over 300 miles of coastline; that must be a priority.”

Davis is an attorney practicing in the Metropolitan area for over 14 years. She has offices in Waldorf and Upper Marlboro. The candidate has been a community activist for over 20 years, a trained litigator who also volunteers her time as a court mediator. Davis has held numerous positions of leadership at the State and local levels.

In 2009, Davis was selected to participate in a nine-month leadership program comprised of outstanding leaders from Charles, St. Mary’s and Calvert Counties. This group explored challenges and opportunities in areas such as health care, education and tourism as they apply to the individual counties and the Southern Maryland region as a whole.

“I am dedicated to being the best representative and most effective leader for the citizens of Charles County,” said Davis.
