Southern Maryland Completes Sweep of Bridgeport

Playing in a rare Thursday matinee, the Blue Crabs put Bridgeport, as well as the rest of the Atlantic League on notice.

The SOMD hitters struck early and often against the Blue Fish pitchers. In the first inning with a runner on first and no outs, leftfielder James Shanks took a Rafael Bergstrom fastball and sent it sailing over the leftfield wall, giving the Blue Crabs a 2-0 lead, and they never looked back. They went on to scatter 11 runs on 14 hits, helped out by three Bridgeport errors.

While Blue Crabs pitcher Ryan Bicondoa never displayed the control fans would have liked to see, he did enough to pick up the win. Bicondoa pitched eight innings, giving up three earned runs on nine hits. The Blue Fish were able to score a fourth run after Shanks dropped a fly ball hit by second baseman Wilson Batista in the sixth inning.

The win brought the Blue Crabs second half record to 12-7 , and gave them sole possession of first place in the Liberty Division. Consistent pitching and strong hitting may have this expansion team playing late September baseball that matters.

(Note- The Atlantic League season is broken down into two halves, with the winner of each half playing for the division title September 23 to 25. The winner of that series will play the Freedom Division champion on September 27. The Camden Riversharks and the Somerset Patriots were the first half division winners.)
