Firefighters Respond to Large Field on Fire in Historic St. Mary's City

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - At approximately 12:30 p.m. on June 28, 2020, a wheat field near Rosecroft Road at St. Mary’s College (located in historic St. Mary’s City, Maryland) caught fire and spread quickly.

Due to the quick response and action of the local volunteer fire departments, it was extinguished as quickly as possible and did not move on to destroy any nearby buildings at the college or any homes that were also in close proximity to the fire. The fire destroyed nearly two acres and was unofficially started by a spark from a combine.

The natural resource officers remained on site throughout night to monitor the situation.

The fire marshal report will be forthcoming after the investigation is complete.

Thank you to Bay District, Pax River, Ridge, Solomons, Mechanicsville and Hollywood Volunteer Fire Departments!
