Retreat House
First & Third Saturdays: Open House
1-5 p.m. at the Retreat House

Enjoy a guided tour of the Retreat House and tobacco barn to learn about General William Smallwood and life on the Mattawoman Creek in the 18th century. Colonial Foodways Guild often do cooking demonstrations in the kitchen on these Saturdays.

Discovery Center
Mondays: Nature Games and Activities
3 p.m. at the Discovery Center

Swing by for one of our many nature games, including bingo, scavenger hunts and predator/prey games.

Nature Story
Thursdays: Nature Craft
10 a.m. at the Discovery Center

Participants will learn fun facts about a particular nature topic or animal. Children will then have the opportunity to make a take home craft relating to the topics covered. This program is designed for elementary school students.

Program will not be held Thursday, July 4.

Sundays: Morning Hike
10-11 a.m. at the Discovery Center

Start your Sunday with a group hike! You'll learn about trees, wildlife and the park's unique environment.

Program will not be held Sunday, July 14.

Animal Feeding
Sundays: Animal Feeding
3 p.m. at the Discovery Center

Join park staff as they feed the animals of the Smallwood Discovery Center. Learn about the animals and what it takes to keep them happy and healthy.

General Smallwood
July 4: A Revolutionary War Hero
10-11:30 a.m. at the Retreat House

Meet the park naturalist at the Retreat House on July 4 to learn about General Smallwood and his role in the Revolutionary War. We will discuss not only his role in the Revolution, but also his impact on the Maryland colony.

July 5 & 19: Night Hike
8-9 p.m. at the Discovery Center

Do you ever wonder what goes bump in the night? Join park staff as we explore the darkness at Smallwood State Park. Don't forget your flashlight, water and sturdy walking shoes for this adventure!

Mountain Laurel
July 6 & 20: Seed Bombs
10-11 a.m. at the Discovery Center

Join the park staff as we create a make-and-take Wildflower Seed Bomb. These seed bombs help to spread wildflowers wherever they are planted.

Sunset Painting
July 26: Paint the Sunset
7:30-8:30 p.m. at the Discovery Center

Show off your artistic side by painting the sunset over the Mattawoman Creek. We will provide paper, paint and the great view.

Discovery Center
July 27: Sedimentary Sandwiches
10-11 a.m. at the Discovery Center

Learn about the different rocks of Smallwood, focusing on sedimentary rocks. This program will conclude with a tasty treat, which has layers of goodness!

July 27: Colonial Life
3:30-5 p.m. at the Retreat House

Take a step back in time and learn about colonial life, including clothing, food and people who called Smallwood home.

MCAC Summer Show
July 12-Aug 11: Summer Open All-Media Exhibition
At Mattawoman Creek Art Center

This all-media show is open to artists 18 years or older. "Road Trip" is the optional theme. Artwork reflecting the theme will receive preference if entries exceed display space.

A reception will be held from 1-4 p.m. on Sunday, July 14.

Every Sunday: Open House
1-4 p.m. at Mount Aventine

This historic antebellum manor home is open weekly for tours. Enjoy the sweeping views of the Potomac River, an afternoon picnic on the lawn or a hike to the waterfront!

Unless otherwise noted, events are held rain or shine, free and fun for all ages; donations are always welcome. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult.

Dress for the weather/activity, wear sunscreen and insect repellent, bring plenty of water and snacks, and check for ticks.
