New York, NY - The Southern Maryland Youth Choir (SMYOC-Choir) has been invited to perform at Carnegie Hall Sunday, June 24 at 2 pm.

The Distinguished Concerts International New York City (DCINY) extended the invitation to the SMYOC-Choir following an “intensive audition process,” as stated by DCINY’s Box Office and Marketing assistant. Artistic Director and Principal Conductor for DCINY Dr. Jonathan Griffith, also commended the choir stating, “[SMYOC-Choir] received this invitation because of the quality and high level of musicianship demonstrated by the singers as well as the exceptional quality of their audition recording.”

The choir is participating in the “World Premiere of a [newly] commissioned work for Treble and Youth Voices,” being led by the composer of the piece, Dr. Cristian Grases, DCINY proclaimed in a press release. Grases worked with one of SMYOC-Choir’s conductors, Bronte Ficek, while she was attending the University of Southern California (USC) as a choral conducting student. In addition to receiving a degree in choral music while attending USC, Ficek earned a degree in neuroscience that she utilizes working in clinical neuroscience research at Johns Hopkins Hospital within the Center for Music and Medicine.

The choir will get to spend five days and four nights preparing, performing and experiencing the “history and culture of New York City,” said Griffith, who also assured that “the performance is the primary purpose” for the visit.

Founded in 2012, SMYOC offers both orchestral and choral programs for ages 8 and older. Their mission is to “nurture, develop and advance talented young musicians in quality orchestral and choral programs.” SMYOC’s Music Director and Youth Orchestra Conductor Julien Benichou will accompany Ficek on the trip.

According to their website, this is DCINY’s 10th year and the organization is the “leading producer of dynamically charged musical excellence.” The organization was founded by Iris Derke (General Director) and the aforementioned Jonathan Griffith. DCINY’s Facebook page notes that they were “named on the 2012 INC 5000 list of fastest growing private companies in the US.”
