It's back! Sharkfest 2018 Preview

Solomons, MD - Join the “ultimate apex predator of the marine world” Saturday, July 14 at the Calvert Marine Museum (CMM) for Sharkfest.

First hosted in 1994, Sharkfest returns this summer for its ninth outing since becoming an annual event. Sharkfest offers three species of live sharks, shark-themed crafts, $5 face painting, and a Tidewater Dental-sponsored inflatable shark slide. Eventgoers will even have the opportunity to have their picture taken in the Jaws of the infamous Megalodon.

New to the event this year is the addition of the swell shark to the live shark tank, updated education stations that have a focus on buoyancy as well as the use of sharkskin’s design in various products materials, otherwise known as biomimicry, and the addition of more hands-on activities.

Sharkfest coordinator Mindy Quinn, encourages everyone to come out “even if they’re a little bit afraid of sharks.” She assures that the event is an opportunity to learn about the “fairly misunderstood” sharks who are “very important” to the ecosystem.

Food will be available for purchase from Dan D’s Concessions and Rita’s Ice. In addition to food, CMM assures that the museum’s store will be “fully stocked with ‘shark’ mementos including toys and books.”

Regular admission rates apply and CMM members are free. A press release put out by CMM reminds the public that strollers are not allowed in the museum and complimentary museum passes “will not be honored.”
