St. Mary’s Relay marks 20 years

Leonardtown, MD - An annual event that began during the 1990s used a 1980s rock anthem as its theme June 3. The 20th annual Relay For Life of St. Mary’s County was held at the St. Mary’s County Fairgrounds. The local event, which raises money for the American Cancer Society, was first held in the county in 1997. This year’s theme was “The 80s: Don’t Stop Believin’, We Can Find a Cure.”

Funds raised are used for research to find a cure for cancer and to provide necessary services for those battling cancer. The 10-hour event also includes components that memorialize those who have been lost to cancer, and celebrate the many who are surviving their dreaded diagnosis and treatment. Sixty teams of relay participants were in motion, executing an array of spirit laps amid the carnival-like atmosphere at the fairgrounds. As of Wednesday, June 7, the event web site listed the Dent Dolphins and Hollywood Elementary as the top fundraising teams and Melinda Tracy as the top fundraising participant. To date, Relay for Life of St. Mary’s County has raised over $102,800.

Entertainers performing at Relay this year included the Great Mills Dance Team and magician Reggie Rice.
