Bullying not a factor in teen's suicide

Lexington Park, MD- Three months after the suicide of a Spring Ridge Middle School student, the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office has completed its investigation.

“There is no indication bullying was the cause of death.” Capt. Edward Willenborg, commander of the Criminal Investigations Division stated.

Thirteen year old Hugo Morales was found dead in early March. His suicide quickly ignited anger among parents in St. Mary’s County who believed his death was the result of bullying. Parents blamed the school for not taking reports of bullying seriously.

St. Mary’s County Public Schools responded to those concerns with a community forum at the Lexington Park Library where dozens of parents and grandparents lashed out at school board members for their response to bullying in county schools.

Superintendent Scott Smith told the district was reviewing how schools respond to reports of bullying and promised to address parents’ concerns.

St. Mary’s County Public School has a strict no-tolerance policy against bullying. Here’s a link to St. Mary’s County Public Schools handbook where it lays out the school’s anti-bullying rule.
