Torch Run raises money for Special Olympics

La Plata, MD - More than 600 runners and walkers turned out for the largest field ever to participate in the annual Torch Run in Charles County, Thursday, June 4.

Citizens gathered at Texas Roadhouse in La Plata Thursday morning in drizzling rain before setting out on the shoulders of Route 301 for the jog to Waldorf—all to raise money for Special Olympics.

Spectators lined Washington Road in La Plata as runners set forth, cheering as they passed the Charles County Courthouse.

Diane Richardson, public information officer for the Charles County Sheriff’s Office, said she wanted to give thanks to the many organizations which make the event possible: Giant-La Plata, Crown Trophy, Texas Roadhouse;  Chick-Fil-A; Mission Barbeque; T&J BBQ; Red Oak Bistro; Roy Rogers; and Community Bank of the Chesapeake.

Runners and walkers were treated to lunch courtesy of Mission Barbeque at the end of the run.
