Deputy Chief Vernon Chester Monday passes away at 58

Deputy Chief Vernon Chester Monday, Jr. of Waldorf, MD, passed away on Thursday, June 11, 2015 at the University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center in La Plata. He was 58 years old. He is remembered as a proud father, grandfather, and brother.

Born on June 24, 1956 in Washington, DC, he was the son of the late Jeannette Windsor Quader and the late Vernon Chester Monday, Sr.

Deputy Chief Monday graduated from Spring Brooke High School in 1974 and subsequently served in the United States Navy as an Internal Electrician’s Mate 2nd Class until he was Honorably Discharged in 1978. He then worked for AT&T as a Communications Technician for many years until his retirement in 2014. In 1982, Deputy Chief Monday joined the Waldorf Volunteer Fire Department and served as EMS Deputy Chief for 24 years. Additionally, he served as Engineer, EMS Lieutenant, Board of Director, and Chairman of various committees within the department. He also served as the Charles County EMS County Chief, President of the Charles County EMS Association, Delegate to the Charles County Executive Committee, and Delegate to the Maryland State Fireman’s Association. Deputy Chief Monday was an EMT and CPR Instructor for the Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute while also serving on the Charles County Honor Guard. He enjoyed camping and spending time with his family. Deputy Chief Monday was preceded in death by his brother Fred Monday.

Deputy Chief Monday is survived by his sister Ronnie Dempsey, brother-in-law Bill Dempsey and sister-in-law Bonnie Monday; children Vernon Monday III and his wife Jennifer, Bobby Monday and his wife Niki, Fred Monday and his wife Marie, and Jessica Monday; his eight grandchildren Tyler, Brooke, Landon, Mia, Braeden, Cianna, Angeline, and Amelia.

Viewings will be held on Wednesday, June 17, 2015 from 1PM to 4PM and from 6PM to 9PM with Fireman’s Prayers at 7PM at New Life Church, 9690 Shepherd’s Creek Place, La Plata, MD 20646 with Funeral Services being held on Thursday, June 18, 2015 beginning at 12 Noon. Interment to follow at Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery.
