St. Mary's names new school administrators

Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Michael J. Martirano, has announced administrative appointments made by the Board of Education at its meeting of June 13, 2007.

The Board appointed Jeffrey Thompson to the position of director of transportation in the Division of Supporting Services.  Thompson, a graduate of Leonardtown High School, currently serves as a transportation broker/logistics analyst for Allen Lund Company, Inc.  His experience also includes working as a transportation supervisor, warehouse supervisor, quality assurance agent, and assistant logistics analyst.  Thompson earned dual Bachelor of Science degrees in logistics and transportation, and marketing from the University of Maryland, College Park.

Steven Whidden was named director of maintenance in the Division of Supporting Services.  He currently serves as a senior commissioning specialist with an engineering consulting firm based in Minnesota, and has over 19 years of experience in the areas of commercial, institutional, and government office building operations, maintenance, and management.  Whidden’s experience also includes serving as a project manager, project coordinator, chief engineer, lead engineer, operating engineer, and instructor.  His accreditation and licenses include steam engineer class 1, steam engineer class 3, and journeyman HVAC.

Tenina Fleming was named principal of Oakville Elementary School.  She currently serves as an assistant principal at Leonardtown Middle School.  Fleming joined the school system in December 2006 after serving as the principal of Friendship Southeast Academy in Washington, DC.  Her experience also includes serving as an academy director, lead teacher, and resident teacher. She is a graduate of Trinity College, where she earned a Master’s degree in educational administration, and the University of the District of Columbia, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in elementary education.

The Board also named Sandra Oliver assistant principal at Lettie Marshall Dent Elementary School.  Ms. Oliver currently serves as an art educator in the Newport News Public School System in Virginia, and also served in the same capacity in the Pennsauken Public School System in Pennsauken, NJ, and at the Renaissance Advantage Charter School in Philadelphia, PA.  She holds a Master of Science degree in educational administration from Gwynedd-Mercy College in Philadelphia, PA, a Master of Science degree in instruction from Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in studio art/art history from Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia, PA.

The Board appointed Carrie Smith to the position of assistant principal at Leonardtown Elementary School.  Smith, who joined the school system in 2001, is currently an English teacher at Margaret Brent Middle School.  Prior to joining the school system, she served as an elementary classroom teacher in Texas, Florida, and Virginia, and taught at St. John’s Catholic School in Hollywood, MD, and St. Mary’s Catholic School in Greensburg, IN.  She is pursuing a Master of Arts degree in educational leadership from Walden University, and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education from the University of West Florida.

Mary Moreland was appointed to the position of assistant principal at Greenview Knolls Elementary School.  Moreland joined the school system in 1998 and currently serves as an instructional resource teacher at Leonardtown Middle School.  Her experience also includes serving as a high school and middle school social studies teacher, a supervisor of 5th grade Model Congress/Model General Assembly/Mode
