Pax River Sailors and Marines support Special Olympics Spring Games

Sailors and Marines from commands throughout NAS Patuxent River were on hand volunteering their services as hundreds of athletes competed at the annual Special Olympics St. Mary’s County Spring Games at Leonardtown High School April 29.

The Sailors and Marines — from commands such as NAS Patuxent River, VX-20, the Marine Aviation Detachment Pax River, and the Fleet Readiness Center to name a few — helped set up and maintain the venues, man the competitive events, encourage the athletes, run errands during the games and distribute medals to the winners.

The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for citizens with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
