Thank you for your compassion and support, Calvert

To the Editor:

The Southern Maryland community has again demonstrated outstanding compassion by joining together with Christmas in April Calvert County to improve the lives of our neighbors in their time of need.

Volunteers whose skill levels ranged from novice to master craftsmen used materials donated by local businesses or purchased with donations to improve the homes of 60 low income neighbors in Calvert County. Most of the work was done in a single day – the last Saturday in April, which is the official Christmas in April workday. Their efforts were coordinated by house captains and fueled by meals provided by homeowners and local charitable groups in a community-wide effort.

They made homes safer, more secure and more comfortable, repairing everything from foundations to roofs, but the most important thing they restored is a sense of hope to many of the homeowners.

It is beautiful to see churches, organizations, businesses, youth groups, and more come together in a spirit of caring and giving to provide improved homes and lives to others and to offer a hope that tomorrow will be better than today.  Our community has been very generous with financial support and the donation of supplies which also makes all of this possible.

There are countless volunteer opportunities available in our community. We offer our sincere gratitude to those who choose to support Christmas in April and continue our tradition of community service.
