New restaurant coming to Leonardtown

Leonardtown is getting a new sit-down restaurant. The Sakura Japanese Steakhouse will be taking over the vacant building in Leonardtown Centre which has housed several restaurants previously. The most recent occupant was Rustic River and before that Arizona Pizza and Perkins Family Restaurant.

There are two other Sakura Japanese Steakhouses in Southern Maryland, in Prince Frederick and Waldorf, and total of 21 in Maryland (13), Virginia (5), New Jersey (2) and California (1).

The business has a few regulatory hurdles to jump over before being ready. According to DeAnn Adler, Leonardtown’s plan's reviewer, a few approvals are needed before the town can issue a use and occupancy permit. The town council did approve a letter of support for a liquor license for the establishment. The Alcohol Beverage Board has not yet scheduled a hearing on a liquor license for them.

According to their website : “Sakura Japanese Steak and Seafood House was founded in 1988 by our president, Marc Ha. Marc opened his first Sakura restaurant in the small town of Fredericksburg, Virginia. This restaurant had only 7 Hibachi tables. Marc worked as the manager as well as a chef of the restaurant. Marc’s life in the late eighties did not only involve this small family run restaurant. Marc also worked as a computer programmer at the Naval Base in Dahlgren, Virginia. Eventually, his personal hard work has begun to pay off. He began to see many of the same faces over and over, made many friends, and received stunning reviews. And now, from his strong growing consumer basis, he has expanded the breadth of his company to the west coast.”
