On May 26 at approximately 3:45 p.m., units from the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office responded to San Mateo Trail at El Segunda Lane for a motor vehicle collision involving two pedestrians.

A 2000 Mercury Mountaineer operated by Sabrina Marie Hesse, 29 of Lusby, was traveling south on San Mateo Trail when it struck 26-year-old William Edward Jones, III, and his 1-year-old son both of Lusby, causing injury to both.

During the investigation, it was learned that the child had run into the roadway, Jones ran out and grabbed him and was subsequently side swiped by the Mercury Mountaineer.   Both Jones and the baby fell to the ground causing injury to the one-year-olds’ head.  He was flown to Children’s Hospital with a head injury.  The status of his injuries was unknown at the time of transport.  Jones refused treatment by EMS personnel.

The scene was marked by collision reconstruction due to the unknown status of the child and the circumstances of this collision. It was determined Hesse had been operating a motor vehicle while suspended.  She was subsequently arrested and charged with driving on a suspended license.  DFC J. Harms is continuing the investigation; however, preliminary investigation has determined that no charges in reference to negligent driving will be issued at this time.

Authorities in Calvert County are on the scene of a serious accident in Lusby near the intersection of San Mateo Trail and Catalina Drive in the Chesapeake Ranch Estates. The accident occurred on May 26 shortly before 4 p.m.

Initial reports indicate a 1-year-old child and an adult male have been struck by a vehicle. The child is being transported by MSP Trooper 7 to an area hospital with a head injury. The adult male is suffering from a leg injury. No word on their condition at this time.

Expect road closures in the area.
